I wish I were 15 years old now. (1) (but I’m not)
(unreal present)

She wishes she could speak English fluently(2) (but she cant)

I wish I were a beauty queen.
= If only I were a beauty queen. (3)

I wish you had been with me while I was being operated on. (4)

I wish I had seen the doctor long ago. (5) (but I didint see the doctor)
If only Ihad seen the doctor long ago. (6)

As you see, we use the simple past after the verb wish to express a present situation we want to be different (1)

Expressing wishes

Study the examples.

I wish I were 15 years old now. (1) (but I’m not.)

= If only I were a beauty queen. (3)
I wish you had been with me while I was being operated on. (4)

I wish I had seen the doctor long ago. (5) (but I didnt see the doctor)
If only I had seen the doctor long ago. (6)

As you see, we use the simple past after the verb wish to Express a present situation we want to be different (1) or events(2). We can use if only instead of I wish to state our wish emphatically.(3,6)
We use the past perfect after the verb wish to express regret about unreal past situations (4) or events (5), that is, something happened or didnt happen in the past.

Exercise 1 .  Make meaningful sentences, paying attention to the meaning of the sentences below. Begin with I wish.

1  Unfortunately I believed him but he isa liar.
2  The camp we stayed in wasnt clean.
3  I am sorry I failed in the exam.
4  My father didnt stop while the light was red, so he was fined.
5  Janet  used her fathers car although she didnt have a driving licence.
6  Tom caused an accident because he was drunk.
7  As they werent punctual, they were dismissed.
8  They didnt take me  to hospital.
9  It was necessary for you to be respectful to your parents but you werent.
10  It was wrong but  they still hit the old man.
